In the 17th century, amidst the looming threat of Mughal invasion from the north and the occupation of Maratha territories by the Bijapur Sultanate from the south, Shivaji Raja emerged as the steadfast champion of freedom for his people, with his stronghold centered around Pune in western Maharashtra. Encompassing the modern-day districts of Ahmednagar, Pune, Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur, this region boasts a rich history as the nexus of power for numerous dynasties.
Within these districts, one can discover a diverse array of stepwells, including L, Z, U, and T-shaped structures, as well as Pokhran, Pushkarini, and Kund, each exhibiting exquisite craftsmanship and intricate detailing. As the greatest Maratha ruler, Shivaji Raje invoked powerful imagery, likening his empire to a Liger—a symbol combining the strength of a tiger with the regal presence of a lion. Such iconic motifs are frequently observed in the stepwells of Maharashtra, serving as enduring testaments to the might and magnificence of this storied land.
